How to Block Porn on Reddit on Your Computer

Key takeaways

• Turning off Show mature (18+) content hides adult communities and posts from your feed and search.
• The iPhone Reddit app has no mature content toggle: it is managed on reddit.com in a browser.
• Muting a community removes it from your feeds, but you can still open it directly.
• Reddit's settings belong to one account and can be switched back on in a few seconds.
• A blocker can block single subreddits and keep the rest of Reddit usable.

Methods compared

1. Turn off mature content in Reddit's settings

1. 1.Sign in on reddit.com and open Settings.
2. 2.Select the Preferences tab.
3. 3.Turn off Show mature (18+) content.

On Android: open Settings, and under View options turn off Show mature content.

On iPhone: the toggle is not in the app. Change it on reddit.com in a browser.

If you keep mature content on, Blur mature images and media blurs adult images in your feed until you click them.

Limits: the setting applies to the account you are signed in to, and it can be turned back on in a few seconds. It hides adult content, but it does not stop you searching for it.

2. Mute communities you do not want to see

1. 1.Open the community.
2. 2.Open its menu and select Mute r/community.
3. 3.Confirm with Yes.

A muted community no longer shows up in your Home feed, Popular feed or notifications. You can mute up to 1,000 communities.

Limits: you can still open a muted community directly, and unmuting takes one click.

Why Reddit's settings do not stop searching

Every setting above is a preference on your account. When you search for adult content on Reddit or on Google, you can turn the setting back on in a few seconds. A second account, or a browser where you are not signed in, does not carry your settings at all.

3. Block single subreddits and keep the rest of Reddit

A website blocker can block one subreddit by its address, such as reddit.com/r/name, while the rest of Reddit keeps working. Ascension can block NSFW subreddits while maintaining access to safe-for-work subreddits.

1. 1.Install Ascension and add its extension to your browser.
2. 2.Load the premade Reddit NSFW list to block 2,000+ NSFW subreddits.
3. 3.Add additional subreddits manually if needed.
4. 4.Choose Always block.
5. 5.Add an Until date lock. Once added, the block cannot be edited, deleted or uninstalled before that date. Set it further out in the future.

Limits: Windows only, with iOS and Mac in development. It does not cover the Reddit app on a phone.

Which method should you use?

• If you only want adult posts out of your feed, turn off mature content and mute communities that still appear.
• If you can switch Reddit's settings back on during a weak moment, use a locked blocker instead.
• If the rest of Reddit is useful, block specific subreddits rather than the whole website.
